Well, I have web stats that I can look at. Since I don't plan to advertise this web site on any other web sites, that should hopefully give me an idea of how well it's doing. But if other sites start linking to me, that'll make it hopeless. Maybe I could ask people to sign a guestbook, showing how they found the site.

Also, the flyers that I've been putting up have those little tear-off tabs on them. So I'll be able to see how many of those are missing each time I pass one.

Cool idea. Would be great if you make some kind of "secret" thing on the flyer that people can do (a number to call, or an unadvertised web page) to get some kind of idea how many people are tuning in because of the flyers. And make it fun for them.

Subject: New listeners through flyers
So I thought of this wacky idea the other day. Actually more like 2 wacky ideas combined into one. It goes something like this - the average person doesn't really know much about podcasting. While they might know what it is, they might think it's beyond their reach because they don't own a portable mp3 player. Or they might just be too lazy to look into how it works. Or the idea of doing anything beyond basic web surfing is just too terrifying for them.

So I set up this web page, http://www.areapodcasts.com, which is nothing but a list of podcasts located in Oregon. Yes, I know there are way too many directories of podcasts on the net and making yet another one is just redundant. But the angle of this page is that it's aimed at people who are sort of clueless and/or unmotivated when it comes to computers. People who will just be listeners, not podcasters.

It's also a simple page - just one page with everything listed right on the front. No clicking around and no searching for podcasts. Clicking on the LISTEN button will launch the Pupu Player for that show, which automatically starts the most recent show.

The other part of the idea is not to bother trying to get it linked from other websites. Instead, all traffic should come from flyers posted in libraries, colleges, restaurants, laundrymats and anywhere else you can find a public bulletin board. I whipped up a couple of flyers which can be viewed here and here.

I also posted PDF's of the flyers on the bottom of the website for anyone who wants to help promote it. The message on each flyer is simple - try to explain what podcasting is as simply as possible and then direct them to look at the website. I thought it'd be a good idea to stick with Oregon-only shows, to hopefully make local people more interested in it.

Originally my idea was to print up a bunch of small flyers for my own podcast and slip them into Ipod & Podcasting books at all the book stores. But it kind of morphed into this instead. What's everyone think? Stupid idea and a huge waste of time? It's okay, I can take the abuse.

I know the list of shows is very incomplete on there. If you'd like yours added, PM me on here. I'll get around to adding more of them soon. I already stuck one of the fliers up at my laundrymat. And I plan to post a few around on the bulletin boards at the college when I register for class on Monday.

The forum is kind of quiet, but I'd love to see that change. The monthly meetups are where we do most of our socializing, so come out to those if you can!

Normally when I join a forum, I attempt to jump into the active conversations. But there don't seem to be any active conversations on here! So this is my post to say hi. I'm Brad, I live an hour south of Portland and I've been making/listening to podcasts since January. I'm hoping to make it to the meetup this month if I have the time. See you all there! Maybe.

Also: http://www.portlandpodcasting.org/2006/06/spam-and-forum-changes.html

I've been deleting a couple of nasty porn spam posts from the forums about once a day, and I'm tired of it. I had changed the permissions so that only registered users could post, so the spammers just registered and kept posting.

So now, I've made it so that only Moderators can post to the forums. "But," you say, "I'm not a moderator! How am I going to post?"

Simple. Go make yourself a moderator. I made the Moderators group "open", so you can join it by logging into the forums, and going to the usergroups page. Choose to join Moderators, and you should be good.

Now, this gives you a little extra power with regard to what you can do on the forums, but our community is tight enough that I trust you guys. Any abuses will cause me to change my mind. And if the freaking spammers join the Moderators group to continue to post, well, I'll have to take more drastic action.

Let me know if you have any questions.

It's the HHB Flash Mic. This mic has all the recording equipment necessary built right into the mic. No more cables or cheesy iRiver's for recording on the spot.

The mic is a Sennheiser omni-directional condenser mic with gain control, so you can conduct group interviews for your podcast, insuring everyone will be picked up by this mic. Once you record your interview, plug a USB cable into the bottom and pull down the audio to edited into your podcast.

What's the best thing about this product? You will look a little more professional with a mic in someone's face rather then an iRiver or a hacked iPod.

Up until now, I have not been able to export a large. multi channel show as an AIFF file. I downloaded the most recent update and finally I have been able to export my show to iTunes as an AIFF file. I had previusly tried every suggestion: open as a song, lock tracks, set iTunes preferences.... I have been recording my shows as songs, I am planning to go back to recording as podcasts again. I'll update when I can say that it works the way I want it to, each time.
