Podcasting Presentation at the October DC503 Gathering

Sorry for the short notice, life has been nuts of late. So with the amazingly large lead in of 14 hours I would like to let folks know that I will be giving a presentation on Podcasting at the DC503 gathering at the Urban Grind at 1pm Saturday October 29th.

DC503 is group of Portland based DefCon type people, thus the talks tend toward the nuts and bolts end of the spectrum. They are a great group who love tech and the things it was not specifically made to do.

So if you are in the UG's neck of the woods (22nd and SE Oregon) come on in.

Update (11/01/2005) You can view the presentation files online either via the OpenOffice doc or the PPT). Enjoy (There is one obvious mistake in the presentation, see if you can spot it)

Podcast Gurus Wanted

Jeri has suggested a great idea.

"Why don't we start a 'Help' list of people who are good at
certain podcast software. Someone, for example, who is good at
SKYPE who anyone who is a member could call or e-mail for
help. It might be Audio-Hijack Pro for example or whatever.
The local Mac club has such a listing and we could do the
same. You could set restrictions on it, for example, only call
between 6 & 7 on Thursday nights. You get the idea. Since we
have so many new members it might be something that would be
appreciated."

Other than the thought of being slammed with phone calls, I think this is an excellent idea :) Perhaps on the blog we can include those that volunteer. Of course the wiki is our repository of common questions and answers, having someone speak with newbies would help spur their interest in finding those answers on the wiki. Well that's my hope at least ;)

Leave a comment if you want to be a Podcast Phone Slave Guru.

I'm Going to be on the radio in Canada - CKNW News Talk 980

I've been asked to participate in a technology radio show called "Get Connected" on the national Chorus Radio Network (CKNW News Talk 980 in Vancouver, B.C.) in Canada. The topic: podcasting. Other guests include fellow Portland podcaster Paul Colligan from PodcastTools.com and some folks from FeedBurner.

The show will air live at 2:00 PM Pacific Time on Saturday, October 22. If you're in the broadcast area, you can listen on CKNW 980 AM in Vancouver, or no matter where you are, you can listen to the live stream from the CKNW site (click "Listen Live", Windows Media Player required). The show will also be released as a podcast, since that's the topic. Once all the details of that get figured out, I'll post a link here.

I'm excited - hope some of you will be able to tune in! :-)

Rosedrop Media Circus Podcast is Live!

Portland Podcasting pal Dan Linn sends word that his podcast from the Rose and Raindrop restaurant, Rosedrop Media Circus, is live:
Live music, original recordings, interviews, comedy, theater and performance art recorded live at the Rose and Raindrop Restaurant and Pub 532 E Grand Portland OR. Hosted by Dan Linn.

Right now, There 5 shows recorded with my son Aaron at the classic Old Portland bar Rose and Raindrop on August 21st. It's a gorgeous place with great food, a terrific beer selection, and free WiFi for your laptop. I may publish some parts of a couple test performances from the Rose and Raindrop earlier this summer. There are contributions from my favorite songwriter Lew Jones (thank you for showing up simply because I asked), and my sons, Daniel and Aaron.

Go check it out - support our local music scene and Portland Podcasters! Thanks for the heads up, Dan. Good luck, and let us know what the community can do to help!

I'm teaching "Podcasting from Mobile Devices" at Podcast Academy

Blogarithms - Podcast Academy Curriculum

The Portable Media Expo and Podcasting Conference is happening November 11-12 in Ontario, California. Many big names in podcasting will be there, and it's the first big geeky podcast event in the U.S.

Doug Kaye, from IT Conversations, is putting on the Podcast Academy on November 10, the day before. As part of the curriculum, Doug has asked me to present/teach a session on Podcasting from Mobile Devices.

I guess that means I have to finalize my travel plans and registration. I've been to so many conferences this year I was going to have to skip this one, but I can't very well do that if they've asked me to present, now, can I? ;-)

Check out the sites above for info on the conference and Podcast Academy, and register if you're intersted. Drop me a line if you're going to be there, so we can get together!

Mark your Calendars! Portland Podcasting November Meetup

It's not too early to mark your calendars for The Portland Podcasting November Meetup. Wednesday, November 9, at 7:00 PM. Urban Grind. Be there AND be square! :-)

Finally there's a meetup where I won't be out of town! I've missed the last two meetups - can't wait to see you all at this one!

New iPod Does Stereo Recording

The Music Thing blog gives a heads up to those that are interested in mobile recording for podcasting. Apple's tech specs for the iPod specifies the new iPod can do High (44.1 KHz, stereo) recording. Also, there is doubt that it records uncompressed AIFF files, but rather in a compressed format.

Currently, iRiver mp3 players are probably the most frequently used piece of hardware for mobile podcasters.

Update: iLounge is reporting that the new iPod's can record uncompressed WAV files in 44.1KHz stereo.

October's Meetup

Last night the Portland Podcasting group met at the Urban Grind Coffeehouse in N.E. Portland. There were 10 of us in attendance and as always, Mac was serving up some strong coffee and excellent wifi.

Attendees

Jeri Dobbs
» International Perfusion Journal
Anna Johns & Jason Ruby
» Delta Park Project
Stephanie
Dan Linn
» Rosedrop Media Circus
Mac

I was excited to see three new members: Stephanie, Rebecca and Scott. Stephanie is in high school and as a class project she is going to start a podcast. Now that's a cool class project. It was great to see her come out and show interest, podcasting seems to be so foreign to high schoolers and teenagers. Prove me Portland! :) Here's some motivation for you; a reporter is currently looking for high schoolers that podcast - so if you podcast and are a teenager, leave a comment and we'll get you in touch with the reporter.

Over coffee and large flat screen we talked about podcasting, blogging, promotion, marketing, etc. We decided that we really need to improve our podcasting resources online - i.e. content on portlandpodcasting.org. So here's a quick list of topics we discussed.

Music Licensing
  • Podsafe Music Network
  • AMP
  • Ask the artist, ask the label
  • CDBaby
  • Indie (unsigned band/artists)
  • Fair Use
  • Give artist credit
Hosting
  • Libsyn
  • OurMedia
  • Podkive
  • Blogger & FeedBurner
  • Blogger & Libsyn
  • Local hosting providers
SOUND ENGINEERING!
  • MP3
  • Encoding help!
  • Best quality that is usable
  • Record to WAV or AIFF
  • Podcastrigs.com
  • Portable Recording
Mastering
  • Garageband (OSX)
  • Audacity (Linux, Windows, OSX
  • Castblaster
  • Step 3 = Quality
  • Levels, Sample Rate, Effects,
  • Get to know an audio nerd! = Portland music, Pro Sound
Get Out There!
  • Directories
  • Podcast411
  • indiepodder.org
  • Know what your info. is - feed, web address
  • Come to the meetings
  • Post to blogs and contact other podcasters
  • Mention other shows
  • Get in the TOP 100!!!@Q@#$Q#$$
  • Do promos
  • Submit to Adam & Company
Obviously these are areas that we need portlandpodcasting.org to answer. After Urban Grind closed for the night, a group of us continued talking outside and covered a variety of topics from RSS to how we can promote the group.

But the best part of the night was revelation that Anna and Jason are Top 100 podcasters! Their 'Lost' podcast is currently #61 on the day's most subscribed to podcasts in iTunes. Congrats guys!
