The Money Thing

Thanks to those who made it to last night's Portland Podcasting meetup. I've been so slammed with life and work lately that it was great to set some time aside and talk about podcasting, technology, music etc.

For the sake of being accountable to those who donated last month and this month, I wanted to publish how much I took in and where that goes. First, just to clarify, we use Meetup.com to manage and plan our meetings and Meetup.com charges $9 a month. So I decided to ask the members into donating whatever they can to cover the charge, and you guys have done amazing! Remember, our plans are to remove ourselves from Meetup.com; Josh has done a great job putting the disparte pieces together, and we'll be proud to call what he's been working on our new "home", so to speak. Here's the money breakdown:

August
Donations = $13
Meetup.com = ($9)
Total = $4

September
Donations: $12
Meetup.com = ($9)
Total = $3

That's $7 extra. Yippeee! The extra money will be used for October's Meetup.com charge.

Josh missed the meetup but wanted to pass this message along.

Added Upcoming Meetups to the Sidebar

Upcoming.org: Groups: Portland Podcasting

Using a badge from Upcoming.org, you can now see meetups and other Portland Podcasting events listed over in the sidebar. Don't miss out on any of the fun!

You can also sign up at upcoming.org and join the Portland Podcasting group, and get updates on events via an RSS feed or iCal.

I'm bummed that I won't make the meetup next week (I'll be in L.A. at the Microsoft PDC conference), because I know it's going to be great. I'll definitely be there next time, though!

Removed the Ads

I removed the Google AdSense ads from this site. I set them up on July 1, with the idea that any revenue they generated would go toward group events and costs.

Well, in the 2+ months that the ads were here, we raked in a whopping $5.90. So, since the ads were a bit distracting (my opinion - no one complained), and weren't doing much, I removed them. (EDIT: I removed them from the feed, now, too.)

Any ideas on what we should do with our $5.90? ;-)

I'm sure there will be tons more from Johnny and others, but here are some photos I shot at today's Podcast Hotel conference at the Doug Fir Lounge on Burnside and NE 9th.

You can see the rest of my photos from the event in my Podcast Hotel set on Flickr.

Podcast Hotel - TinyScreenfulsWiki

I created a page on the TinyScreenfulsWiki for the Podcast Hotel conference going on right now, to be a place for people to add, edit, and share information and useful stuff. Did you attend? Have a question? Want to promote your site or podcast? This is the place to go. It's your space - have at it.

I'm Presenting at Podcast Hotel Wednesday 9/7

Portland Podcast buddy Alex Williams has pulled together a conference that's the first of its kind in Portland - Podcast Hotel. We'll have local podcasters and people interested in podcasting, as well as other influentials in the world of new media, such as Eric Rice and JD Lasica.

Alex has asked me to present, along with John Hartman, on "How to record, produce, and post a podcast" for Windows users. I'll be doing a "live" recording, hopefully with some audience participation, and posting it as a podcast. Look for it tomorrow.

If you're in the Portland area, head over to the site for all the details, and come on down to the Doug Fir and join us!

"130" Podcasts Available from NPR, Probably None of the Ones You Want

NPR : Podcast Directory

We've known that NPR was going to get into podcasting for a while, and the directory of their shows available via podcast is finally available. Go have a look - 130 podcasts are listed.

I'm off to start browsing and subscribing to my favorite shows. I'm already backlogged with the shows I'm currently subscribed to - there are too many great podcasts out there to keep up!

EDIT: What a rip. None of the NPR shows I care about (All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air, etc.) are available as podcasts. Guess NPR is still too closely wedded to Audible to make the good stuff available by podcast...
