Road Show Video

Well it is done and might I say Mr. Rice did a nice job on the Portland video. We would have liked to see a few more people come out to this event but we had a good core group of people and a good time was had by all. We had fun in the sun here in Bridge Town with that Bay Area media maniac ER. We started out at Seattle’s Best Coffee and the moved on to the Farmers Market. On a side note I was really hopping that the conspiracy theorist shoes would make it onto the video. I guess shoes are not very exciting footage. We finished up with a little za and a brew at Pizzicato. Check out the video at http://video.ericrice.com/videoblogs/roadshow-portland.mov

See you Thursday

Introduction from a vodcaster

Hi. I met some of you at the Saturday convergence for Eric Rice's roadshow. My name's Ed Stastny and I have been videoblogging (vodcasting?) since April this year. You can check out my whatchamacallit (I like "vodcast") at http://bigtimetelevision.blogspot.com ... the proper name is "Big Time TV", named in homage to the pirate TV station on the short-lived Max Headroom television series.

My latest post is a short video about my experience at the Free Geek Street Fair on Saturday.

My background is in web-development. Currently I freelance as a Flash and Perl programmer and I run a non-profit site called SITO.org, a place for artists to post art and participate in collaborative projects. I'm interested in vod/podcasting for a variety of reasons. My passion has always been with independent media. Back in Omaha, I worked on my own fanzine, local papers, the school paper, the school radio station and I produced my own public access show for nearly three years.

Podcastwise... I mostly listen to the movie, science and fandom-type shows. My favorite radio show of all time is "This American Life", though. So I like to think my tastes are eclectic.

See you all at the meetup.

Good Times at the Portland Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow

Jason Scored an Eric Rice Postcard

I've added the rest of the photos I took at the Portland Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow on Saturday to the Portland Podcasting Flickr Group. Go check them out, if you're so inclined. Highlights include Greg Hughes demoing his X41 Tablet PC, and Eric Rice showing off how big his, erm, windscreens are.

If anyone else has any photos of the event (or any other Portland Podcasting-related photos), post them up on Flickr, and add them to the Portland Podcasting group. And make sure to subscribe to the feed for the group photo pool, so you don't miss out on any cool photos taken by your fellow Portland podcasters and videobloggers.

Tim's First Videoblog and Comic

Northwest Noise: Blogger Comic

You need to check out Tim's comic, if you haven't seen it already. It will be worth more than Spiderman #1 someday, I predict:

Off to see Eric Rice at the Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow

Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow :: Roadshow Portland - July 16, 2005

Eric Rice is in town, and you know what that means - something to do with podcasts and videoblogs. We're going to get together in Downtown Portland, and, uh, walk around, I guess. Should be lots of fun, and you can bet that there will be lots of podcast and videoblog documentary of the outing as a result.

Maybe we'll hit the Grand Opening of the Apple Store in Pioneer Place Mall.

Cool. I'm subscribed.

Hope we'll see some OPB folks at the next meetup! We've got a great, vibrant podcasting community here in Portland - it would be great to have them as a part of the community.

July Meetup Venue Change

The Portland Podcasting July Meetup - Meetup.com

Make note of the venue change for the July Meetup on the 28th - it's now going to be at Urban Grind in NE - check the link above, and this post from Tim, for details.

See you there!

Podcasting at Intel

(Crossposted from my internal Intel blog)

Had lunch today with the program manager for figuring out podcasting at Intel. He had heard that I'm a huge blogging and podcasting geek (guilty on all counts), so we chatted about how Intel can take advantage of these new media for communication.

The conversation ranged over a lot of topics, from good podcast production and aggregation software, to how Intel's culture of fear and paranoia (”Only the paranoid survive”) is a roadblock to joining the new conversation.

I made several suggestions of sites and software to check out, and promised to send links. Rather than do it in an email, I'll provide the list here, so others can benefit from it, or add to it (post a comment). That's one reason blogging is so useful - it lets you capture and share knowledge with others. The next time someone searches for “podcasting software” at Intel, hopefully this will be the first post they find.

Essential Reading - The Cluetrain Manifesto

Audio Recording Software - Audacity

Podcast Production Software (not mature yet) - Castblaster, MixCast Live

Podcast Aggregators (”podcatchers”) - iPodder, Doppler, iTunes 4.9, Odeo

I think that covers everything we talked about. Sunil, it was great to meet you, and I look forward to staying in touch. Let me know when you're ready to come on TinyPodcast! :-)

If you have any suggestions for additions or changes to this list, or something useful related to podcasting, post a comment. Let's hear from everyone!

Adam Curry Mentions Portland Podcasting on the July 3 Daily Source Code

Daily Source Code for July 3rd 2005 #202 - dailysourcecode.com

Adam Curry was successful in getting his Private Pilot's License for Fixed Wing while he was here in Portland - congratulations, Adam!

After his final check ride, he cut a podcast telling us all about it. He mentions the "Portland Podcasting Association" (that's us!), and how he was sorry he missed out on our meetup. But Adam loved being in Portland, and hopefully, with Podshow now being headquartered in San Francisco, Ken Clark and the rest of us will be able to convince Adam to visit Portland soon, and join us for a meetup!

DPP on Podcast411

Our interview with Rob from Podcast411 is up. Check it out (MP3).

Podcast Chapter Markers

Hey, all. I just discovered a great tutorial for inserting chapter markers and chapter artwork into your podcast. Yes, it is AAC-only and the tool is Apple-only, meaning anyone who wants to do this must do the extra work of having two feeds to make everyone happy since the rest of the non-Apple universe uses MP3. (via MAKE blog)

...and now back to your regularly scheduled weekend of drinking, partying, and blowing stuff up...

Click for Great Justice - Introducing AdSense

You may have noticed that I have implemented Google AdSense targeted ads on this site. I think this will be a good way to earn a little revenue towards group activities (pizza, room rentals, etc.). I chatted with everyone at the meetup last night, and there were no objections, so I've gone ahead and put them up.

I've tried to make them blend in with the site as well as I can. In my opinion, AdSense targeted ads add value - they're almost like extra content. There are also ads in the site feed. I've been running AdSense on TinyScreenfuls.com for a while now, and I've been pleased with the results. It's not making car payments or anything, but it at least covers hosting costs.

All ads on PortlandPodcasting.org are in a seperate "channel" from my other ads, and all revenue will go toward group activities and costs. I'm not looking to make any money from this. The group will decide how to spend any money that comes in.

So, whenever you come visit the site, or read the feed in your aggregator, click on the ads. It's the clicks that count, and depending on the ad, each click earns a non-trivial amount.

Just think - if this really takes off, we could plan a Portland Podcasting Carribean Cruise! OK, maybe not, but you get the idea...

Not Too Early to Plan for the July Meetup

The Portland Podcasting July Meetup - Meetup.com

Looks like Tim already has the July meetup on the calendar - Thursday July 28, 7:00 PM. It's not too early to head over and RSVP, and plan to be there!

Some people have also expressed interest in a Saturday-type get together, like a BBQ, trip to the aviation museum, etc. Post your ideas/feelings/suggestions on the matter, and we'll see about pulling something together.

The meetup last night was great. I had a blast talking with everyone, showing off gadgets and toys, and generally evangelizing stuff that I think is cool.

Don't miss the photos I've posted to Flickr. There are several ways to see them. I've tagged them all "portlandpodcasting", and I've also added them to the Portland Podcasting Flickr Group.

If you've got any photos from the shindig last night, post them up to Flickr, and tag them "portlandpodcasting" and/or add them to the Portland Podcasting group, so we can all share.

Thanks to Tim for organizing the meetup, and providing the pizza. Ken Clark let us know that Adam Curry couldn't make it last night, but that he'll be in Portland several more times this year, and that we'll try to get him out to a meetup.

Hope to see you all at the next meetup!
