Don't Miss the Portland Podcasting June Meetup Tonight!

The Portland Podcasting June Meetup - Meetup.com

The June meetup for the Portland Podcasting group is tonight, June 30, at 7:00 PM. Location is the same as the past couple of months - the Community Room at Cedar Hills Crossing mall in Beaverton (hit the link for details and directions). Thanks again to the Beaverton Mac Store for providing the venue.

Tim's bringing pizza and drinks (let's chip in to cover it, so Tim doesn't have to take the hit), and I'm sure we'll have a good time. 13 people have RSVP'ed so far, but you don't have to RSVP to come - just show up!

We've been working on getting Adam Curry (the Podfather himself) to come to the meetup, since he's in town to get his pilot's license. He couldn't promise, but he said he'd try to come. I hope he makes it.

If you're in the Portland area, and are a podcaster, or interested in podcasting, this is the place to be tonight. Be there and be square! :-)

Already Seeing the Impact of iTunes 4.9

In the last two days, I've checked my Feedburner stats for TinyPodcast, out of curiosity to see what impact, if any, the release of iTunes 4.9 would have. The results have been surprising.

According to Feedburner, I have a "circulation" of about 300 (regular, subscribed listeners). Yesterday, that jumped to 500. According to their little pie graphs, about 30 percent of those subscribers are using iTunes 4.9 (17% on Windows and 13% on Mac). I'm also getting 5000-6000 "hits" (probably non-listeners downloading shows) per day, which is a similar boost.

Hope everyone else is getting new results from all the new people out there that have a podcast aggregator. A rising tide lifts all boats...

DPP in EW

Hey look.. We're famous. Ok not really but still pretty neat.

Podcasts Are Everywhere!

When I got the train this morning, I was listening to today's Daily Source Code on my Zen Micro. I sat down next to a guys listening to his iPod, and I noticed that he was also listening to the Daily Source Code - episode #200, from Gnomedex.

I showed him my Zen, and he smiled and nodded. I pulled out my camera to take this shot, and the guy across the aisle asked why I took the picture. I explained that were both listening to the same thing - Adam Curry's podcast. Seemed to go right over his head. :-)

Anyway, I left a TinyScreenfuls.com card with the iPod listener, and told him I would post the photo there. If you're him, post a comment or email me, and let me know what you think about podcasting! I was actually in the audience while Adam was recording DSC #200, the one you were listening to. Make sure to check out my podast - TinyPodcast.

Small geeky world, isn't it? :-)

1 Click Subscriptions in 4.9

I just posted a little how-to on podcast411.com.

Makes it really easy for people on your website to click a link and be automagically subscribed to your show.

4.9 is a GO!

Odeo

If you have your ODEO Beta account, I highly recommend "Claiming" your show and then adding a graphic and some tags. When you make a graphic it says you can upload any size.. But I recommend 64x64, otherwise when they resize it for you it gets a little blurry.

If you don't have an ODEO account yet.. Go sign up for the beta. I am already getting some traffic from the site and seeing it in my MP3 logs.

iTunes 4.9: on or before July 7th

It is getting closer.. AppleInsider has this little scoop.

Apple Computer is distributing media alerts and invitations to a special event that will take place on or before Thursday, July 7th, but the company is not yet offering details.

According to the web report, Apple is asking the media to prepare for new product announcements on or before the first Thursday in July.

Industry sources believe the event may very likely coincide with the planned high-profile launch of iTunes 4.9 with Podcasting support. Sources had previously stated that the software was due for launch by the first week of July.

Invite Adam Curry to our Portland Podcasting Meetup

I just had an idea that I'm not sure anyone has thought of. All you Portland Podcasters that are going to Gnomedex in Seattle should try to invite Adam Curry to the Portland Podcasting Meetup next Thursday. He is supposed to be in town at that time. So join me in filling his inbox with emails and you lucky few that will be at Gnomedex tie him up and spank him till be agrees to come...................to the meetup.

Gnomedex or Bust..

Well the wagon train leaves in the AM for Seattle and the Gnometacular event known as Gnomedex lots of really cool people will be there including the Podfather AKA Adam Curry as well as Dave Winer, Steve Gilmor and the Scobilizer himself. A few locals as well Alex and Josh will be front and center. I have so much gear I need a Sherpa but will get some awesome stuff and share with the group all the new tid bits like all about IE 7 and the Microsoft RSS team as well as the Itunes 4.9 updates maybe we might even get a beta? I will be on my way back from California when the next meeting is taking place but I will catch up with you all the next time. I would also like to second Jason's idea of an outdoor event perhaps a Podnic or Pickcast where eat drink and be merry while recording our thoughts on ants, red and white checkered patterns and Yogi Bear’s favorite Pick-a-nick baskets.

Whoever you are, thanks

Thanks to whoever had the aggregator that was hammering the feed - traffic has subsided to normal levels. All is well, all is well.

Someone is hammering the PortlandPodcasting.org XML feed

I figured out what is causing the huge spike in traffic that I noticed. Someone, in the last 24 hours, has been requesting the XML/Atom feed for this site (http://www.portlandpodcasting.org/atom.xml) at a ridiculously high rate - more than 32000 hits just today - that's about 22 times a minute.

Someone has got a misconfigured RSS aggregator. If you subscribed to this feed in the last 24 hours, please check your aggregator settings and fix them. Your aggregator should be configured to check for updates no more than once an hour, if not once a day (this site isn't updated much more than daily).

My web host doesn't provide very good access to my raw log files, so I haven't been able to track down the IP address of the offender. So, I'm going to try it this way.

Whoever is hammering the feed, fix your aggregator or unsubscribe from the feed, please! You're chewing up my bandwidth, and costing me money.

Delta Park Project Promo on the Daily Source Code!

I'm catching up on podcasts, and just heard the Delta Park Project promo played on the 6/17 Daily Source Code. Way to go Jason and Anna!

The Portland Podcasting June Meetup - The Portland Podcasting Meetup Group - Meetup.com

The date and details for the Portland Podcasting June Meetup have been finalized. It will take place on Thursday, June 30, at 7:00 PM at the Cedar Hills Crossing Community Room (the same place it has been for the last two months). Check out the link above for all the nitty gritty details, and make sure to RSVP so we know you're coming (you don't have to RSVP to come, though).

Thanks as always to Tim Germer for pulling this all together, and especially for changing the date to accomdate those of us who are going to Gnomedex in Seattle next week.

Can't wait to see you all - be there AND be square! :-)

Delta Park Project: A Pop Culture Blog

Delta Park Project: A Pop Culture Blog

I'm listening to DPP Episode 33 right now, and Jason and Anna mentioned the launch of Delta Park Blog. Imagine a text version of the funny and interesting pop culture observations that we've come to expect and love from Jason and Anna.

Good stuff, guys. I'm subscribed!

Portland Podcasting Flickr Group

Flickr Group: Portland Podcasting

Flickr is an awesome photo sharing site, if you didn't already know. Tags, groups, and RSS/Atom feeds make it easy to find and keep track of photos you're interested in. Many of the Noise Squad are already on my contacts list.

I've created a Group for Portland Podcasting. With it, we can post messages (not sure how much we'll use that, since we have this blog), and have a group photo pool. A place to share photos of meetups, setups, and general PDX coolness. websage already found and joined the group, shortly after I created it. Nice sleuthing, John. :-)

Besides the group, I've also taken to tagging relevant photos with the "portlandpodcasting" tag, to make it easy to share and keep track of them. I suggest that we all start using that tag where appropriate.

Visit the link above to see (and join) the group, then start sharing your photos! If you're not already signed up for a Flickr account, it's free, and easy to do. And definitely worth your while. Let me know if you have any questions.

Noise Squad Banner

Thanks to Jason Ruby of the Delta Park Project for whipping up the new Noise Squad banner. Have a podcast in the Portland area, and want to get listed? Drop us a line.

I don't know if it's my machine or not, but the bullets in the banner don't quite line up right for me. Anyone have any ideas? We can change the CSS of the page to fix it, but I'm an idiot when it comes to CSS, so if you've got an idea how to fix it, let me know. Thanks for fixing it up, Jason! That only took minutes - you're the man! :-)

Pictures, Ideas and the Crazy Life

I have been doing nothing in this arena for since the last meeting and I am itching to get back into it. I have just finished a major software release and then I went to Phoenix to be involved in the formation of the Environmental Information Coalition/EIC. I wont go into any detail but WOW! If you are interested check out my blog.

I have spoken with Josh about this but I would like to see some audio put up on this site. Perhaps we could all do a promo or put up the one we have, for our podcasts. We could also do some how to recordings. I will pony up my audioblog account or Tim you said something about Eric Rice a few meetings ago, free one year, I dropped him an e-mail but he must have forgotten about it. If you can get one for this group maybe thats the way we go? I would also be willing to drop a little money in for it as well. Speaking of money I wanted to say thanks to Tony for offering to sponsor us.

Josh, Alex and I will all be at Gnomedex during the next meeting, we have put in a request to move the date for this meeting. Check out the new pictures I have from the last meeting. http://www.flickr.com/groups/portlandpodcasting/pool/

FYI: I am having a hell of a time getting the video down. I have had to rebuild my desktop so I am hoping I might be able to get it soon. If not Hollywood comes back into town soon so maybe I can get him to do it while I am out of town.

Promos are..Fun Quick and Easy.

Hey guys..

Anna and I completed a :30 Second Promo and it is starting to make its rounds in the podOsphere. There are a lot of shows that love to play these things to get the word out on other podcasts.

I would love to play NoiseSquad :30 second spots if you make one. Once you do you should also post it to PodcastPromos.com so that others will find it.

*** Also Some Cool News ***

We are kicking some butt in Google (for now) on some cool keywords:

Comedy Podcast #1
Pop Culture Podcast #1
Funny Podcast #3

Jason

p.s. There is also our highlight reel, but that's just for fun and not really a promo.
