Delta Park Benefactor Program
So we are trying a little experiment over at Delta Park Project. Would you pay to support your favorite podcast? Would you toss 50 cents per show at content you appreciate and want to foster?
Some Folks think it is a good idea; others have been very successful doing this. What do you think? Are we crazy? Sell-outs? How many listeners do you need to have in order to make this worthwhile?
Check out our Benefactor Program. Whatcha think?

Hey guys, you know I love you but I think this could be a really bad idea. But what the hell do I know. Goodluck, I guess.

ok.. but why? And note: we aren't forcing anyone to do this. You can still get our show without being a benefactor.

It is very hard for me to put my finger directly on why I feel it's bad. I guess it just really comes down to the question, what is a podcast worth? Two bucks a month? If every podcast I subscibed to charged $2 a month that would end up being a really serious bill. Way more than a satelite radio subscription. By charging you are puting yourself in line to compete with satelite radio and head to head podcasting simply won't cut it. Not yet anyway. Not to say podcasting contect isn't just as good, I sincerely believe it is better. But I believe one of the big reasons that it IS better is tied to it being free. Do you really think podcasting would be were it is today if Adam and Dave were charging each other to listen last summer and to join the community you had to start paying? People will comercialize this medium. They already have. But if we all comercialize podcasting will just become another corperate battleground and the sense of community we have will fade away. There are professional bloggers and there will be/are professional podcasters but the pro's are not what make there spaces powerfull and great. Sorry for this long comment. I will explore this further in my blog. www.chuckandadam.blogspot.com
I don't make any money on that either.

I totally agree with that. This isn’t a subscription plan like you would pay for Cable or Magazines. This is a donation model. If you like it support it. If you are cheap and don’t want to pony up.. Fine. You can still get the show.
However. This isn’t a new thing. NPR and PBS live by this model. Shareware/Donationware has operated this way for eons. Jason Kottke and Heather Armstrong do this with great success for their blogs. Why not for a podcast?
I personally toss a few bucks toward things I like to help sustain them. So why not let people support your podcast if they want to? Don’t force them, but give them an opportunity to get a little ownership in the show; a personal stake.
Maybe we will make a couple of bucks, but the money made will go back to the show in the form of paying expenses or maybe cool prizes for games we play on the show. By no means is this a way to ‘get rich’.

as jason is aware, i totally support this model - purely for the sustainment of the creative producer...
if it's not right for some, so be it - but if you like a certain show, and want to help insure that they have some help in doing what they do - then become a benefactor...
brendan is doing the same thing btw - http://centripetalforces.com/podcast/
what i mentioned in one of his comments is this - the podcast producer shouldn't feel pressured to do shows because of their subscribers…
it’s about helping to sustain the voice not actually paying for something concrete that must be delivered - imho ;)
